Clemson defeats #14 Wake Forest 3-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Clemson freshman Amanda Garcia scored a pair of goals to lead the Lady Tigers past 14th-ranked Wake Forest, 3-1, in ACC women’s soccer action from Spry Stadium Tuesday night.

With the win, Clemson improves to 8-5-2 overall, 2-3-0 in the ACC. With the loss, the Demon Deacons fall to 9-4-3, 0-3-2 in the ACC. Garcia opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the match. The attacking midfielder picked up her second goal of the season at the 8:11 mark to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.

Clemson pushed its lead to 2-0 on a well earned goal from Courtney Foster. Paige Ledford sent in a beautiful arching cross that Foster headed home past a diving goalkeeper Kenna Healy. The goal was Foster’s team leading eighth of the season.

Kristen Kemp cut the deficit to a single goal with the first goal of her career. Kemp, who missed the first 14 games of the season after rehabbing from a knee injury, thundered home a shot at 68:10 of the match. Katherine Winstead was credited with the assist.

Garcia would put the match away with her second tally of the match and third of the season at 77:48. The freshman beat a Wake Forest defender and blasted a shot from 25 yards out – beating an out-stretched Healy into the upper far corner. The Demon Deacons got off 13 shots compared to the Tigers nine and Wake Forest had five corner kicks to Clemson’s one.

Clemson will play host to Duke at Historic Riggs Field on Friday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the Lady Tigers’ next action.
