CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Beth Keller scored one goal and had two assists in leading Clemson to a 3-1 win over Virginia in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Women’s Soccer Tournament at Chapel Hill, NC late Thursday night.
With the win, Clemson improves to 13-5-1 overall, while Virginia falls to 12-8 this season. Clemson is ranked eighth in the NSCAA poll and 15th in the Soccer America poll. Virginia is ranked 16th in the NSCAA poll and 11th in the Soccer America poll.
Clemson struck first in the first half as Beth Keller took a pass from Alison Burpee and dribbled a third of the field to beat Cavalier keeper Julie Harris in the 34th minute of play. Clemson led at halftime 1-0.
Keller assisted on the next goal in the 71st minute of play as her cross went to the right post and Tricia Williams pounced on it to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Virginia struck back five minutes later as Meeker’s free kick was headed into the cage by Maxwell to break up the shutout and pull the Cavaliers within one. It is the second consecutive game that Meeker has fed Maxwell for a goal.
As the Cavaliers pressed for the tying goal, Clemson got a breakaway and Deliah
Arrington’s shot hit the post where Burpee ran onto it and deposited it in the empty net with less than five minutes in regulation.
Clemson will play North Carolina Friday night in the ACC Tournament’s semifinals at 8:00 p.m.
