CLEMSON, SC —Nathan Thornton scored two goals each in leading Clemson to a 6-0 victory over Georgia Southern in a men’s intercollegiate soccer match at the Tigers’ Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, SC Tuesday night.

With the win, Clemson improves to 2-5-1 overall, while Georgia Southern falls to 0-7-1 this season. The Tigers have now won two matches in a row including Clemson’s 1-0 upset win over eighth-ranked Virginia last Saturday night.

Thornton, a senior civil engineering major from Spring, TX, now has a team-leading four goals this season.

Tommy Drake also had one goal and two assists in the match for the Tigers. Teammate Nick Burton had two assists in the match.

“We didn’t particularly play well in the first half,” said Clemson Head Coach Phil Hindson. “I think we are still fatigued from the Virginia match last Saturday night. We looked as if we got our second wind and played an excellent second half. We are playing with a lot of confidence right now. We need to keep this up as we prepare to play at St. Louis on Saturday night.”

“There is no doubt that we are playing with a lot of confidence,” said Clemson’s Nathan Thornton. “Scoring the first goal in the last two games has really helped us. We’ve put together two wins in a row now, and we need to keep our confidence and continue to work hard.”

Clemson outshot the Eagles 19-5 in tonight’s match. Clemson’s Joseph Bendik had two saves and the Eagles’ goalkeeper Mike Gubosh had three.

The Tigers will play at St. Louis on Saturday, October 3, in Clemson’s next action.
