Clemson Defeats Duke, 2-1, In ACC Men’s Soccer

CLEMSON, S.C. – Kenny Cutler scored the game-winning goal with under 12 minutes left to go in the match and led 24th-ranked Clemson to a 2-1 victory over 15th-ranked Duke in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s soccer match at Clemson, SC Sunday afternoon.

With the win Clemson improves to 3-2-1 overall, while Duke falls to 2-3 this season. It was the first ACC match of the season for both teams. Clemson scored early in the match at the 2:49 mark as Andre Borges scored from six yards out. Kenny Cutler flicked the ball to Borges who took a shot. A Duke defender saved the ball but was unable to control the rebound. The ball went back to Borges who sent another shot into the goal. This was Borges’ third goal of the season.

Duke tied the score 1-1 at the 73:00 point into the match. Justin Bodiya took a shot from 22 yards out and Clemson’s goalkeeper, Phil Marfuggi was unable to control the save. The Blue Devils’ Owoicho Adogwa put in the rebound from eight yards out near the left post.

Kenny Cutler scored the winning goal at the 78:29 mark. John Cooper drove down the left side of the field and crossed the ball to Cutler. Cutler’s shot from outside of the 18-yard box went into the net for his first goal of the season.

“I am really happy with the win,” said Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair. “We have so many people hurt and we were trying to get through the week. We really needed this victory. Kenny Cutler stepped up and played well.

Duke put the pressure on us in the second half. We showed character and the effort is there. Again I ham happy we found a way to win.”
