Clemson Claims Two Flight Championships At Furman Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, SC – Tiger women’s tennis players Maria Brito and Federica van Adrichem each took home flight championships on the final day of competition at the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, SC. Clemson’s Carol Salge won her match at flight four to finish third in the tournament with a 2-1 record for the weekend.

Brito easily defeated Natasa Vuckovic of South Carolina in the flight three title match, not allowing Vuckovic to win a single game. Van Adrichem claimed the flight two title in much different fashion. Her opponent, South Carolina’s Gira Scholfield, won the first set, 6-3, but van Adrichem pulled out close second and third sets, 7-6(3), 7-5, for the crown. Salge’s victory came against Furman’s Lauren Tomory by a score of 6-1, 6-3.

Daniela Alvarez fell in her flight one consolation match to Laura Ganzer of South Carolina, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 to finish eighth in the weekend event, while Tiger Kathi Gerber was defeated at No.6 by Tennessee’s Samantha Orlin, 6-0, 6-4 to finish fourth. Clemson’s Gabrielle Solek-Tefft was overpowered by Ali Salomone of Wisconsin in the flight seven bracket’s seventh-place contest, 6-0, 6-0.

The Tigers will next compete in the USTA Women’s Invitational in New York, NY from Oct.7-11.
