Clemson Claims 5-2 Victory over Ohio University

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson junior Steve Reba and sophomore Matt Henrie combined to allow only two hits as the Tigers claimed a 5-2 win over Ohio University Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in front of a crowd of 3,819.

Reba took a no-hitter into the seventh inning when Bobcat left fielder Cory Keylor launched a two-run homer over the right field fence. Keylor scored right fielder Mike Arbinger, who led off the inning on only the second walk of the game issued by Reba. Arbinger broke up the perfect game in the fourth inning when he reached base on a walk.

Reba pitched 7.0 innings, allowing the two runs on one hit, two walks and eight strike outs. He moved to 3-0 in his fourth appearance of the season. Reba has 16 no-hit innings to start games this season.

Henrie came on in relief to pitch the eighth and ninth innings allowing only one hit against seven batters to pick up his second save of the year. Walt Novosel fell to 1-2 for Ohio in 6.0 innings of work.

Clemson again started a game by scoring in the first inning. Shortstop Khalil Greene flew out to center field, but the sacrifice scored Ryan Riley who was hit by a pitch to start the inning and had advanced to second on the first of two Novosel wild pitches.

The Tigers, which improved to 8-4 on the year, added a trio of runs in the second inning. Steve Pyzik and Zane Green managed two base hits in the inning for Clemson, but two runs were scored as a result of an error on Ohio shortstop Tony Gandee and the other was the result of a Novosel balk.

The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the eighth when Jeff Baker hit his fourth double of the season to score Greene who walked. Baker was 3 for 4 against Ohio with one RBI.

With the loss, the Bobcats fell to 3-3 this season.

Clemson will start right-handed pitcher Ryan Childs, who is 0-1 on the year with a 16.88 ERA in 2 2/3 innings of work. He will go against right-handed pitcher Denny McGee, who is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 15.0 innings.

The two teams conclude the two-game series Sunday at 1:00 PM at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The game will be broadcast on WGOG-FM (96.3) in Walhalla.
