Clemson Assistant Golf Coach Qualifies for US Mid-Amateur

Aug. 10, 2006

Clemson, SC-Clemson assistant golf coach Jordan Byrd qualified for the 2006 United States Mid-Amateur championship on Wednesday when he shot a 69 at Orangeburg Country Club. Byrd was the medallist for the qualifier.

The US Mid-Amateur will take place in mid-September at Forest Highlands Golf Course in Flagstaff, Arizona. It is a competition of 256 players from around the US who are at least 25 years old.

This is the second major USGA national championship that Byrd has qualified for in the last two weeks. The former Furman star who just finished his first year as an assistant on Larry Penley’s staff, had never qualified for a USGA event previously. Last week he finished second at the South Carolina Amateur.

Two weeks ago he shot a 133 at Columbia Country Club to be the low qualifier for the US Amateur. The US Amateur will be played at Hazeltine Country Club in Chaska, MN August 21-27.
