Aug. 28, 2005

BIRMINGHAM, AL– Clemson and Alabama-Birmingham played to a 2-2 tie in a men’s exhibition soccer match at Birmingham, AL Saturday night.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead as Clemson’s speedy forward Dane Richards drove home a double-pass in front from Mark Buchholz and Hermann Trophy candidate Nathan Sturgis in the 19th minute.

The Blazers’ Jason McLaughlin tied the score with a goal from the right side as he took a pass from Derek Rios in the 37th minute.

Clemson took a 2-1 lead with 3:02 left to go in the first half. Ryan Roushandel gathered a rebound in front of the goal and sent a shot to the back of the net.

UAB tied the score 2-2 with 3:19 left to go in regulation as Two-Boys Gumede scored from a pass from Michael Biggs.

Clemson out-shot UAB, 16-10, and the Tigers’ goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi finished the night with two saves.

“It was a good team performance,” said Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair. “We showed improvement in the back. We had great performances from our newcomers like Alan O’Hara, Bryson Moore, Micah Usry, Parker Rogers, and Dane Richards. We were without some of our starters tonight due to various injuries, but it was a good result on the road against a good team. I am happy with our progress during the preseason.”

The Tigers open the 2005 season as Clemson will play host to South Carolina on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Historic Riggs Field.
