Carmina Giraldo Advances To Quarterfinals Of ITA Southeast Regional

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Clemson senior Carmina Giraldo advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles and doubles draws of the ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Tournament held Nov. 2-6 on the campus of Wake Forest University.

Giraldo, the number three seed in the tournament, lost to sixth-seeded Amanda Johnson in three sets (6-4, 0-6, 0-6). She defeated Coastal Carolina’s Carlin Kannan 6-1, 6-1 and Tennessee Tech’s Lupita Hernandez 6-1, 6-4 en route to the quarterfinal match. In doubles, Giraldo and Anna Savitskaya defeated Allen and Oulevay of UTC 8-6 in the first round. They went on to upset sixth-seeded and #25 Katie Granson and Kathy Sell of Duke in the second round and recorded an 8-4 win over Barreto and Rojas in the third round. Ninth-seeded Bergman and Smith of Wake Forest defeated Giraldo and Savitskaya 8-2 in the quarterfinals.

The doubles tandem of Renata Brito and Laurence Jayet also had a successful tournament, advancing to the round of 16. The fifth-seeded duo defeated Tennessee Tech’s Hernandez and Rivera 8-2 after a first round bye. Eleventh-seeded Rookledge and Skeen upset Brito and Jayet 8-2 in the round of 16.

In singles action, Jayet lost a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Kentucky’s Carolina Mayorga in the first round while Gene Holman of Furman defeated Brito in a close three-setter (6-4, 4-6, 6-4).

Christina Oldock defeated Gina Craig of UNCC 6-2, 6-3 and Isabel Declercq of Charleston Southern 6-1, 6-4 in the prequalifying rounds. North Carolina’s seventh-seeded Julie Rotondi defeated Oldock 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the main singles draw. In doubles, Oldock and Stiglic posted a first round 8-3 win over Alonte and Heshalman of MSU before losing 8-0 to third-seeded Johnson and Miller of Duke.

Coastal Carolina’s Medina Brajambasic defeated Ana Stiglic in a close two setter, 7-6, 6-4 while Anna Savitskaya lost a 7-5, 6-2 match to second-seeded Kathy Sell of Duke. Ashlea Bowen defeated ETSU’s Jessica Irey 6-3, 6-2 and Kentucky’s Shannon Stafford 6-1, 6-0 in the prequalifying rounds. Bowen and Sunnie Harmon defeated North Carolina A&T’s Alston and Snyder 8-1 before losing 8-0 to Tennessee’s second-seeded duo of Castellvi and Ojeda.

“Despite not having good draws, we played tough and had some great matches,” said head coach Nancy Harris. “This has been our most solid fall performance from the top to the bottom of the lineup ever. Our results have been positive and we are looking forward to a great regular season.”
