Bek, Wong still alive at ITA Carolina Regional Championships

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Day three at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships saw some separation of the top players in the region. Five Tigers were among the final 16 remaining singles players in the region, but only Josipa Bek as able to survive into the quarterfinals. Bek also teamed with Keri Wong to move into the semifinals of doubles.

Bek and Wong started the day with a n 8-4 win over Bhambri and Nagaraj of NC State in the morning. The Tiger tandem is ranked #5 nationally, and are the top overall seed in the tournament. They are coming off of a national doubles runner-up finish in the Rivera ITA National Championships. They will take on Hannah Mar and Elizabeth Plotkin of Duke in the semifinals on Sunday.

Freshman Klara Vsykocilova made sure that it wasn’t all good for the Blue Devil senior, and she upset Plotkin, who is ranked #50 in the nation, by a 6-0, 7-5 margin. She would later fall to #34 Martina Pavelec of Wake Forest in the round of 16, but it was a breakthrough win for the Tiger freshman.

Keri Wong, who is ranked #39 nationally, won her first match of the day handily, before falling to North Carolina’s Shinnan Featherston, 5-7, 6-3, 6-7(4) in the round of 16.

Sophomore Nelly Ciolkowski , ranked #68 in the nation, won her second round matchup with Tessa Lyons of UNC, before falling to #55 Sandhya Nagaraj of NC State in the round of 16.

Freshman Maria Belaya was the fifth Tiger in the round of 16, as she knocked off Kayla Duncan of Wake Forest in the second round before falling to #29 Ellah Nze of Duke.

Bek and Wong are competing for a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships, which are held in Flushing, NY from Nov. 4-7.
