Augusta State Defeats Clemson in Championship of Hooters Collegiate Match Play

Nov. 10, 2002

Oliver Wilson defeated Clemson’s Matt Hendrix at the number-one singles match 2 and 1 and led Augusta State to a 3-2 victory in the championship of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at Myrtle Beach, SC. It marked the third time in the last six years that Clemson had lost in the championship match of the event.

Clemson reached the championship match of the 16-team event with earlier victories over Purdue, Oklahoma State and Arizona. The Tigers reached the finals without the services of the nation’s number-one player D.J. Trahan, who was sitting out the event after a hectic fall that included leading the United States team to victory in the World Amateur championship in Malaysia two weeks ago.

Miller won the 15th and 17th holes in capturing the victory for Augusta State, who also defeated Clemson in the Ping Preview at Oklahoma State earlier this fall. Hendrix had a two-hole lead through seven holes, but Miller won the eighth and ninth holes to square the match. It was still all tied through 14.

Clemson got victories from senior Ben Duncan and junior Gregg Jones. Duncan defeated Jay Haas, in a battle of Greenville, SC area players, 3 and one. The match was all square after five holes, then Duncan took the lead for good on the sixth hole. Jones was victorious five-and-three to complete an outstanding week. The second-team All-American had a 3-0-1 record for his four matches.

Scott Jamieson defeated Brian Duncan, who was in the lineup replacing Trahan, his first action as a Tiger. Jamieson won the close match 2 and 1. Kalle Edberg defeated Clemson’s Jack Ferguson 3 and 2.

Hendrix and Ben Duncan finished the week with a 3-1 record, while Jones was 3-0-1. Brian Duncan and Jack Ferguson were 1-2-1. This tournament concluded Clemson’s fall season. The Tigers are ranked number-one in the latest polls. There will be a final fall poll issued in December.
