Alumni in the Pros: July 7

Nearly four months after the MLS season was put on hold, play is set to resume at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on July 8 at 8 p.m., as Inter Miami CF will square off against Orlando City SC in the opening match of the MLS is Back Tournament.

The tournament will run from July 8 to Aug. 11 with all matches set to be played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The group stage matches will open play and results will be added to a club’s record earned in the opening matches of the 2020 season. Group stage matches will run until the 25th, with the knockout stage set to be played soon after. Following the knockout stage, qualifying teams will play in quarterfinal and semifinal matches with the tournament set to culminate on Aug. 11 with the final match.

The winner of the tournament will earn a spot in the 2021 Concacaf Champions League.

Extensive medical protocols have been put in place to ensure that all participants are in a safe and healthy environment. All matches will air on MLS partner networks and will give viewers unprecedented access to players and coaches in an effort to create a unique viewing experience.

It was announced on July 6 that Robbie Robinson will not be participating in the tournament due to personal matters. FC Dallas will also not participate in the tournament.

Thursday, July 9

  • New York City FC v. Philadelphia Union – 9 a.m. – ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ESPN App, TSN, TSN App.

 

Saturday, July 11

  • FC Cincinnati v. Columbus Crew SC – 10:30 p.m. – ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ESPN App, TSN, TSN App, TVA Sports, TVA Sports App.

 

Sunday, July 12

  • Sporting Kansas City v. Minnesota United FC – 8 p.m. – ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ESPN App, TSN, TSN App.

 


The USL will play a total of 263 games over a 13-week period in an effort to decide the 16 teams which will advance to the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs. The playoffs are set to begin during the second weekend of October.

Every match of the 2020 USL Championship season will air on the ESPN family of networks. ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ are set to deliver all of the action.
