Jelelgo Earns Second, Clemson Completes ACC Championships

CARY, N.C. – The Clemson Tigers completed the 2024 ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday as the women finished 11th overall and the men finished 16th in Cary. After competing in her first ACC Cross Country Championships, freshman Silvia Jelelgo shined as she was the first Tiger to cross the finish line in the women’s 6k to secure second place overall. Three women were named All-ACC after tabbing Top 21 finishes in the 6k.

“Today was a reminder of just how strong the ACC Conference is,” Head Coach Vicky Pounds. “I’m proud of the effort that both teams gave today. Most everyone ran personal bests or close to their personal best.”

In the women’s 6k, the Clemson power trio of Jelelgo, Judy Kosgei and Gladys Chepngetich stayed with the front pack for majority of the race as Jelelgo began to pull ahead after the 2k split. Jelelgo, who has been a top three finisher in all four meets this season, was the second runner to cross the line as she finished with a time of 19:22.6. Jelelgo was the first freshman to finish the race.

Shortly following Jelelgo was Kosgei as she secured fourth place overall with a time of 19:40.0. Chepngetich finished 12th overall with a time of 19:53.4. Jelelgo, Kosgei and Chepngetich were named All-ACC after finishing in the Top 21.

In the men’s 8k, senior Sawyer Dagan was the first Tiger to complete the race as he finished with a time of 23:27.3 to secure 45th place.
