Redman Advances to Semifinals of Western Amateur

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson rising sophomore Doc Redman won a pair of matches on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Western Amateur at Skokie Country Club in Skokie, Illinois.  The Clemson freshman All-American is two wins away from becoming the first Clemson golfer to win the prestigious event that features an international field.

As it is, Redman is the first Clemson golfer to reach the Final Four of the 115-year tournament that is annually held in the Chicago area.   Kyle Stanley reached the elite eight of the tournament in 2007, the summer after his freshman year at Clemson.

Redman qualified for the match play portion of the tournament with a 72-hole total of 274 during the stroke play.   The 10-under par score tied for sixth place.  The top 16 players advance to match play.  Redman, a native of Raleigh, N.C., had rounds of 72-67-66-69 earlier in the week. 

On Friday, Redman defeated William Gordon of Davidson, NC and Vanderbilt University, 1 up.   Redman was one down after 13 holes, then won the 14^th and 17^th holes to go one up with one to play.  Both players then made birdie on the 18^th hole, giving Redman the victory.

In Redman’s second match on Friday afternoon, he again trailed by one hole through 13 holes.   Redman’s opponent, 2016 Junior Amateur champion Min Woo Lee of Perth Australia, had made 23 birdies in stroke play, second in the field.   But, it was Redman who went on a birdie run on the back nine to win the match 2 and 1.  

Redman made birdie on his first two holes, but still trailed through eight holes.  He then made birdie on every odd numbered hole from holes 9-17 to win the match.    He won holes 14, 15 and 16 to go from one down to two up.

Redman will play Texas A&M All-American Cameron Champ on Saturday morning in the first semifinal.   Champ made national news in June when he finished 32^nd at the US Open.
