CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Last season, Clemson completed a dramatic comeback in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Vanderbilt to advance to the Sweet 16. There was no such drama this season, as No. 13 Clemson (6-2) defeated No. 15 Vanderbilt, 4-0, on Sunday in a consolation match at the ITA Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, VA. Vanderbilt fell to 3-3, with all three losses coming to ACC teams in Charlottesville. The Commodores dropped 4-3 decisions to both No. 3 North Carolina and No. 9 Miami earlier in the tournament. Continuing on the momentum that the Tigers had from yesterday’s comeback against No. 11 Michigan, Clemson won the doubles point on a pair of victories. Beatrice Gumulya and Yana Koroleva defeated Lauren Mira and Ashleigh Antal, 6-4, on court one while Ani Miao and Jessy Rompies beat Georgina Sellyn and Frances Altick, 6-3, on court three. The Miao/Rompies duo improves to 3-0 on the young season as a pair. Romy Koelzer and Tristen Dewar led their match 4-3 before it was called. Clemson earned the doubles point in all three matches during the tournament and is 6-1 on the season in doubles play. Singles play began with a Yana Koroleva trouncing of #61 Lauren Mira. Koroleva did not drop a game, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Koroleva has defeated Mira the past five times they have matched up in singles and doubles, including the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament last season when Koroleva won 6-3, 6-2 at number one singles. At flight six, Jessy Rompies vanquished No. 102 Ashleigh Antal 6-2, 6-0. Rompies moves above .500 in singles for the season, up to 7-6, after winning her last two matches. Beatrice Gumulya continued the Tiger success, upending Courtney Colton 6-2, 6-2. Gumulya has now won the last four sets she has played against the Commodores, dating back to last year’s NCAA Tournament, when she fought severe cramping for a comeback win to clinch the trip to the Sweet 16. Clemson finishes the ITA National Indoor Championships with a lot of momentum. After dropping the first match to No. 8 Cal and falling behind early to Michigan, the Tigers responded coming back to win the match against the Wolverines before thoroughly handling the Commodores. The Tigers will have the week off before matching up with No. 33 South Carolina in Columbia on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
