The Clemson men’s swimming and diving team remains in fifth place with 248.5 points at the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Tommy Rappold claimed his first ACC Title in the 100 fly with a time of 47.32. The time provisionally qualifies Rappold for the NCAA Championships and lowers his own Clemson record by nearly one-half second. Rappold becomes Clemson’s first ACC Champion in a butterfly event since 1986 when Tim Welting won the 200 fly, and the first Tiger to win the conference crown in the 100 fly since Coy Cobb in 1985.
Buddy Reed earned an eighth-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 3:54.35, setting a new school record in the event by .01 seconds. On Wednesday, Reed set a new Clemson record in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.81.
Jordan Raynovich earned a 15th-place finish in the 400 IM. His time of 3:58.89 is the second-fastest of the season behind Reed. Jon Mengering finished the 200 free in 11th place with his season-best time of 1:39.37.
Atilla Ruszka earned sixth-place in the 100 breast with a time of 55.71, the best time of the season, and the sixth-best time overall in Clemson history. Andy Bergren finished in tenth place with a time of 56.39.
Virginia holds on to the overall lead heading into the final day of competition. The Day Four lineup will be the 200-backstroke, 100-freestyle, 200-breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650-yard freestyle, platform diving and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Preliminaries will begin at 11:00 a.m. with finals commencing at 7:00 p.m.
