Tigers to Compete at VertCross Invitational on Friday

Clemson, S.C. – The Clemson cross country teams are set to return to racing as they will compete in the VertCross Invitational on Oct. 18 in Kernersville, N.C. The women will be covering the 6K distance during their effort, while the men will race over the 8K course. Last time out, the women’s team earned third-place honors in the Women’s Gold race at the Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational, with the men finishing 11th in their Gold section.

The teams take to the course following their competition in Notre Dame, Ind. on Oct. 4. The teams combined to earn 14 personal bests at the meet. The squad’s effort was highlighted by Logan Morris earning her first collegiate cross country win. Morris recorded a 10-second personal best during the performance as she covered the 5K course in 16:49.5.

The women’s side saw sophomore Liz Sauder earn a new personal best of 17:45.4 as she crossed the line in 28th place. Mikie Harris, Jenna Gearing and Morgan Wittrock rounded out the scoring five for the women.

The men’s team will look to have junior’s John Ward and Colt Griffith continue to lead the team, as Ward has been the Tigers’ top finisher the past two meets. Marlin Young, Andrew Castano and Jackson Leech aim to continue their presence as a part of the Tigers’ scoring five after the three joined Ward and Griffith to help the team tally 288 points at Notre Dame.

Friday’s competition will bring to an end the regular season slate for the teams, as they will travel to Blacksburg, Va. to compete at the ACC Championships on Nov. 1. The team will be returning to familiar territory after they competed at the course earlier this season when they participated in the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational.
