No. 7 Miami Overpowers Clemson Saturday

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 7 Miami Hurricanes were too much for the Clemson women’s tennis team on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Tigers 7-0 at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. With the loss, the 29th-ranked Tigers fell to 8-7 (6-4 ACC), while the Hurricanes, who won their ninth match in a row, improved to 13-4 (8-2 ACC).

The Tigers’ Tristen Dewar and Ally Miller-Krasilnikov started out hot in doubles play, leading 4-0 to open their match at No. 2, and winning by a final score of 6-2. The matches at No. 1 and 3 doubles were close through the first eight games, before Miami took the lead on both courts, ultimately winning 6-3 and 6-4, respectively, to secure the doubles point.

Although the Hurricanes swept the singles matches, the Tigers put up a good fight against their highly-ranked opponents. After losing their first sets 6-2, both Ayan Broomfield at No. 1 and Fernanda Navarro at No. 2 continued to fight, resulting in much closer second-set results. Broomfield fell 7-5 to fifth-ranked Stephanie Wagner and Navarro forced a tiebreak, falling 7-6(3) in her second set against the nation’s sixth-ranked singles player, Sinead Lohan. Joana Eidukonyte at No. 3 and Dewar at No. 4, both fell in close first sets, 7-6(5), before their Miami opponents closed out the second sets, 6-3 and 6-4, respectively.

Clemson plays two matches on the road next weekend, at No. 44 Notre Dame on Friday, April 8 and at Pittsburgh on Sunday, April 10. The match against the Irish starts at 3:30 p.m. in Notre Dame, Ind. and the match versus the Panthers is at 12 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
