#3 Clemson Defeats #4 UCLA in USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships

Clemson, SC – Clemson’s Alix Lacelarie clinched the victory for the Tigers in a hard-fought, three-set match at the No.4 singles position. Lacelarie defeated UCLA’s Tracey Lin by a score of 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4. Third-ranked Clemson avenged their 2004 NCAA semifinals loss to UCLA, ranked fourth, with a 4-3 victory in the 2005 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. With the win, the Tigers improve to 3-1 overall.

Clemson swept the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Playing at the No.1 position, Alix Lacelarie, ranked 25th in the ITA doubles poll, defeated Alex McGoodwin and Riza Zalameda, 8-3. Ioana Paun and Richele LeSaldo clinched the point for the Tigers with an 8-6 victory over Sarah Gregg and Tracey Lin in the No.3 doubles match. At the No.2 slot, the 21st-ranked duo of Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito teamed up to defeat Laura Gordon and Elizabeth Lumpkin by a score of 9-7.

In the singles matches, #5-ranked Julie Coin defeated ninth-ranked Riza Zalameda in the No.1 singles contest, 6-3, 6-2. Coin improved to 13-2 overall for the 2004-05 season and 4-0 in dual matches. UCLA’s Alex McGoodwin, ranked 122nd, notched the victory in the No.2 singles match after #97 Daniela Alvarez retired in the second set. McGoodwin had won the first set, 6-1, and was ahead 4-0 in the second. Alvarez fell to 4-8 overall.

At the No.3 position, Clemson’s Romy Farah, ranked 88th, lost the first set to the Bruins’ Sarah Gregg, but then won the second and third to gain the point for the Tigers (4-6, 6-4, 6-4). Farah is now 3-1 in dual matches and 10-3 overall.

Brito, ranked 114th, fell in the No.5 singles match to Laura Gordon, while the Bruins’ Elizabeth Lumpkin defeated Carol Salge. The loss was Salge’s first as a Tiger, compared to three wins.

The Tigers return to action on Feb. 12 against the Baylor Bears in Waco, TX at 1:00 pm.
