MADISON, WI – Nancy Harris and the 15th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team are in Madison, WI for the Final 16 of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, and will take on #8 Southern California (5-0) at 3:30 pm central on Friday. The Tigers (8-0) advanced to Madison after defeating #37 Texas A&M and #20 Ole Miss in Clemson duing the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Tigers, ranked 15th by the ITA, have defeated five ranked teams so far in 2010, including #4 Georgia in Athens last week. The 8-0 start is the best by a Clemson team since the 1986 team. Clemson features reigning ACC Player of the Week, Laurianne Henry, as well as 9th-ranked Ina Hadziselimovic.
The ITA National Team Indoor Championships feature the top teams in the nation, and was whittled from a group of 64 teams down to 16 during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend from Jan. 30-31. Clemson came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat #37 Texas A&M, 4-3, then returned the next day to defeat #20 Ole Miss, 4-3, who had beaten #32 Illinois the previous day.
This is the second consecutive season the Tigers and Trojans will match up at the tournament. The #9 Trojans beat the 12th-ranked Tigers, 4-3 in 2009 in the consolation rounds of the tournament. The Tigers won the doubles point, but were only able to take two singles matches. Clemson is 0-7 all-time against Southern Cal, with all matches having been played at neutral sites.
