#14 Kentucky Upsets #2 Clemson at USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships

Madison, WI – The 14th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats upset the #2 Clemson Tigers at the 2005 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships on Thursday evening. The Wildcats won the doubles point for a 1-0 lead in the match in route to a 5-2 victory. Clemson falls to 1-1 on the season, while Kentucky improves to 4-1.

At the No. 1 doubles position, the Tigers’ Daniela Alvarez and Romy Farah fell to Aibika Kalsarieva and Sarah Foster, 8-2. Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie of Clemson won their match at No. 2 doubles over Kim Coverntry and Joelle Schwenk, 8-5. The Wildcat’s team of Lara Mauerer and Christine Simpson defeated Maria Brito and Carol Salge in the No. 3 doubles match to gain the point for Kentucky (8-3).

In the No. 1 singles match #7 Aibika Kalsarieve of Kentucky managed to take only one game from Clemson’s Coin, who is ranked fifth in the ITA poll, as she won the match 6-0, 6-1. She improves to 11-2 overall.

Freshman Carol Salge won her match at the No.6 position to improve her record as a Tiger to 2-0. She defeated Daniella Petrisko in three set for the victory (6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10)).

However, the Wildcats won the other four matches in singles play. In the No. 2 singles contest, #30 Sarah Foster defeated #88 Daniela Alvarez fell to #58 Kim Coventry (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 3 slot. Kentucky’s Joelle Schwenk won over #114 Alix Lacelarie fought a tough match but fell to Lara Mauerer, 7-5, 6-4.

Clemson will return to the court on Friday morning at 10 am EST in the consolation bracket of the tournament.
