HALFTIME: UVA 47, Clemson 32

Kelly’s 3 Point Stance:

  1. Sizzling Sophomore: Clemson sophomore Tiffany Lewis caught fire in the first half scoring 13 points and knocking down three 3 pointers. Lewis easily surpassed her 7.5 ppg average in just the first half of play.
  2. Controlling the Boards: The Tigers did an excellent job of crashing the boards in the first half. Clemson outrebounded Virginia 16-14 and has already pulled down eight offensive rebounds.
  3. Locking Down Randolph: Clemson held Virginia’s leading scorer, Faith Randolph, to only five points in the first half. The junior came into today’s contest averaging 18.2 ppg.

Fun Fact of the First Half:Clemson Head Coach Audra Smith played basketball at the University of Virginia from 1988-1992. She was also a part of three final four teams and two ACC championship teams as a Cavalier.

Keys to Victory:

  1. Virginia averages six three pointers a game and has already surpassed their average, hitting nine threes in the first half. The Tigers need to focus on contesting every three pointer the Cavaliers attempt in the second half and forcing Virginia to beat them in the paint instead of behind the arc.
  2. The Tigers have to be more disruptive on the defensive end and pressure the Cavalier guards on the perimeter. Clemson only forced Virginia into four turnovers in the first half of action.
  3. Finally, Clemson needs to get more offensive production from its bench in the second half. The Tiger bench only scored two points in the first half, while the Cavalier bench poured in 12 points.
