May 13, 2006

Greensboro, NC – The Clemson women’s track & field team concluded its pre-regional efforts at the Aggie Last Chance Meet at the Irwin Belk Track on the North Carolina A&T campus. Three Lady Tigers posted regional-qualifying marks on Saturday, as did the 4x400m relay team of Randi Hinton, Ope Sobanjo, and Tia Perry. Saturday was Clemson’s last chance to qualify for regionals in the event, and the 4x400m team came through with the program’s first regional mark in the relay this season. In addition, thrower Della Clark hit a personal best en route to winning the hammer throw title. In total, Clemson won four events on Saturday.

Sobanjo ran a 12.51 in the finals of the 100m dash Saturday. Hinton ran a 56.28 in the 400m, easily the best time of the season for a Lady Tiger in that event. Thea Dix won the 800m run with a time of 2:13.72, her personal best. She beat teammates Patrice McMillan (2:18.92) and Candice Johnson (2:23.31), who finished third and fourth respectively.

Polly Hardy won the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.75 seconds, her third regional mark of the season in that event. Finishing that event in the runner-up spot with her third regional effort as well was Miyamoto, who clocked a time of 13.87. Hill was third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.31, while Perry was sixth in 1:07.

The 4x400m relay team ran a time of 3:41.81 to surpass the regional-qualifying standard. The team also placed first on Saturday in that event.

Miyamoto finished runner-up in the triple jump after posting a mark of 39’7.75″. She has already qualified for regionals in that event.

In the discus throw, Della Clark improved on her second-best mark in school history after posting a personal best mark of 194’2″. Her previous best was 185’4″ at the ACC Championships last month. She won the event handily, while teammate Rochelle Kokayko placed fourth with a mark of 170’1″.

The Lady Tigers’ regional qualifiers will return to action on May 26-27 at the NCAA East Regional at the same site in Greensboro, NC.
