CATHEDRAL CITY, CA – The Clemson women’s tennis team picked up three singles and two doubles wins on the first day of action at the Duals in the Desert. Play will continue throughout the weekend at the Moore Tennis Academy on the Desert Princess Resort in Cathedral City, CA.
Rookie Estefania Balda won in straight sets over Baylor’s Zuzana Chmelarova at number six (6-2, 6-3). Playing in just her second tournament of the fall season due because of an injury, sophomore Laurianne Henry dropped her first set against Stephanie Wetmore of UCLA. The native of nearby Anderson, SC rebounded to post a 6-2 win in the second and won a third-set tie-break, 10-7, for the victory.
At the top flight, Clemson’s Ani Mijacika fell to 34th-ranked Taylor Ormond of Baylor (6-2, 7-6(6)). Alexandra Luc then suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Trojan Lela Entahkabi in the number-four bracket and Federica van Adrichem was defeated by Laura Reichert of North Carolina, 7-6(5), 6-4.
The Tigers fared better in doubles action with wins in two of their three match-ups. Mijacika and Wong partnered to defeated Fansler and Amanda Fink of Southern California by an 8-2 margin at flight one. Luc and Balda then won an 8-4 decision against Texas’ tandem of Stephanie Davison and Maggie Mello in the number-three bracket.
Hadziselimovic and Van Adrichem fell to the Trojan team of Lindsey Kinstler and Gabriela Niculescu, 8-4, at flight two.
