Women’s Hoops Downs Winthrop, 86-43

Dec. 15, 2001

Clemson, S.C. — Chrissy Floyd scored a career high tying 26 points, while Leah Roper added 14 points and nine rebounds in just 15 minutes of play, leading Clemson to an 86-43 women’s basketball victory over Winthrop Saturday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. Clemson improved to 5-3 with the victory, while Winthrop fell to 1-6.

The contest was a matchup of mentor and pupil coaches. Winthrop second-year head coach Cheryl Nix played for Clemson from 1984-88, including the 1987-88 season under current Clemson Head Coach Jim Davis.

Floyd and Roper were just two of four Lady Tigers in double figures. Center Maggie Slosser connected on 6-9 shots from the field, had eight rebounds and 12 points, while Lakeia Stokes added 11 points in 20 minutes off the bench. Kanetra Queen had eight assists and four rebounds in 19 minutes as a reserve.

Winthrop was led by cener Anne Hollensen, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds, the game’s only double-double. Charlotta Wennefors added 10 points, while Stephanie Pannell had 11 rebounds to lead both teams.

Winthrop struggled from the foul line, hitting just 7-22 for the game, including just 4-16 in the first half. In fact, Nix had her team shoot free throws much of the halftime interval in an attempt to improve in that area. But, Winthrop still shot just 3-6 from the line in the second half. Clemson hit 16-24 from the charity stripe.

Clemson also had a large margin when it came to turnovers. Clemson had just nine as a team, its low total for the season, and forced 24 Winthrop miscues. Clemson had 16 steals and just the nine turnovers. The Tigers tigers had a 48-43 advantage on the boards.

Clemson had a 36-18 lead at intermission, but Winthrop cut the margin to 53-40 with 9:36 left on a score from underneath by Pannell. At that point in the game, had Winthrop shot 70 percent of the line, they would have trailed by just five points.

But, that was as close as Winthrop could get. Clemson went on a 30-3 run to close out the game over the last 9,36. Clemson scored the last 19 points of the contest. Winthrop had just one free throw over the last 7:42 of the contest.

The Lady Tigers travel to Penn State for a contest Tuesday night in State College, PA.
