Women’s Golf Finishes Second at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, SC – Ashlan Ramsey won individual medalist honors and the Clemson women’s golf team finished second, at the Lady Paladin Invitational that concluded on Sunday afternoon at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, SC. Clemson shot a team score of 867 for the 54 hole event, just two shots off the pace set by the University of Wisconsin, who had the best team round of the tournament on the final day.

This is the second consecutive runner-up finish for the Tigers, as they finished second to nationally ranked Florida by one stroke in the Cougar Classic held September 8-10 in Charleston, SC. Florida shot nine under on the final day to catch the Tigers in that event and Wisconsin shot a tournament best seven under par on Sunday.

Clemson was in second place behind GRU Augusta by five shots entering the final round, and passed that team by three shots on Sunday. But, there was no stopping Wisconsin, who was an NCAA Tournament team last year.

Clemson freshman Ashlan Ramsey, the number-one ranked amateur in the world according to Golfweek, won the individual championship by three strokes over Eunice Yi of Georgia Regents University.

Ramsey had rounds of 68, 71, and 70 for the tournament, giving her six consecutive rounds at pa or better to start her Clemson career. Ramsey’s seven under par 209 is the Lady Paladin Invitational tournament record, which is in its 42nd year. She had 12 birdies and just five bogeys for her 54 holes of play on the par 72 course.

She finished as the co-individual champion with teammate Sloan Shanahan in the previous tournament, the Cougar Classic in Charleston, SC.

Sloan Shanahan finished tied for 3rd individually this weekend with a three under score of 213. She is now seven under par for her first two tournaments combined. She had rounds of 69-73-71 at Furman. Her round on Sunday included three birdies and two bogeys.

McKenzie Talbert finished tied for 12th, giving Coach J.T. Horton‘s team three of the top 12 in the field that included 16 teams and 90 players.

Lauren Salazar finished tied for 31st with a 227 total, including a 76 on Sunday. Jessica Hoang finished tied for 41st after he second straight round of 75 on Sunday. Redshirt freshman Taylor Ramsey, competing as an individual, posted scores of 78,82, and 80 in her first tournament as a Tiger.

The team will play next in Chapel Hill, NC at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The tournament will be held at Finley Golf Course, October 11-13.
