Women’s Cross Country Second At SC Collegiate Championships

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s cross country team finished second in the South Carolina Collegiate Championships, and placed fifth at the 2002 Clemson Invitational, held Saturday morning on Clemson’s campus. The University of Alabama claimed the Clemson Invitational team title with 48 points, followed by Charlotte with 56 points. Western Carolina placed third with 59 points, and South Carolina was fourth with 95 points. Clemson finished fifth with 111 points, College of Charleston was sixth (136 points), and South Carolina State rounded out the field with 221 points. South Carolina’s Jenny Lake was the individual champion, covering the course in 22:42.

The Lady Tigers were led by Casey Phillips who covered the 6K course in 23:47 to finish seventh. Laura Ann Rukat placed 14th with a time of 24:27, and Jenny Barton was 21st in 25:19. Jennifer Hooten finished 34th with a time of 26:25, while Shannon Day was 40th in 27:19. Tiffany Charles posted a time of 28:12 to finish 43rd, Erica Jaros was 46th in 29:32, and Kim McGill finished 52nd with a time of 34:48.

In the South Carolina State Championship meet, Phillips was the runner-up. Rukat placed fourth and Barton was fifth. Hooten finished 13th, Day was 16th, and Charles was 19th. Jaros finished 22nd, and McGill was 28th overall. Phillips, Rukat and Barton each earned All-State honors.

The Clemson women’s cross country team returns to action on Sat., Oct. 12 as the Lady Tigers travel to Greenville to compete in the Furman Invitational.
