CLEMSON, SC – Clemson head women’s basketball coach Cristy McKinney has announced the signing of Keyrra Gillespie for the 2009-10 season. Gillespie, a native of Statesville, NC, is the #5-ranked player in the Southeastern Hoops Report and the 18th-ranked point guard in the nation according to ESPN HoopGurlz.
Gillespie is the reigning Ms. Basketball from North Carolina and has been a three-time conference player-of-the-year at Statesville High School. She has led the Greyhounds to a 69-15 record in three seasons and to a state regionals appearance in 2008. Gillespie, whom the Clemson coaches describe as the consummate point guard with great vision, passing ability and ball handling skills, was a first-team all-state selection for the 2007-08 season and has lettered three times in track as well.
“They say the best point guards are ones that make their teammates better. Keyrra is definitely a player that makes everyone around her better,” McKinney said. “She has great instincts on the basketball court and tremendous court vision. Our returning players will love playing with her. She will have an impact on Lady Tiger basketball.”
The Lady Tigers have just one senior on the 2008-09 roster.
