What’s Happening with SOS…

March 3, 2011

My name is Lydia Hassell. I am a senior rower and a three-year member of the Solid Orange Squad. Today, Linda White and I visited Homeland Park Elementary to talk to three fourth-grade classes about the Be a T.I.G.E.R! character education program.

I opened with an icebreaker activity to show teamwork…each class competed against each other to see which class could line up in correct order by birth month/day. It was wild to see the interaction and how the students worked together. We talked about how they use not only teamwork, but all the other traits in their lives. I also shared with them how I practice the T.I.G.E.R! attributes. The kids were full of examples and stories about how they can improve their character.

I had a lot of fun explaining who I am and my sport of rowing. I was amazed at how respectful the kids were and the fact that they even remembered the traits from previous visits by our student-athletes. Through SOS, I have talked to many school kids about the importance of good character and I am proud that the students seem to take it to heart. It is a little reminder for me to have strong character values…I never know who might be watching me! I really have enjoyed working with SOS and being involved in the Clemson community.
