Volleyball Defeats Duke

October 9, 1998

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson volleyball team, ranked third in District III, defeated Duke Friday night at Jervey gym. The Tigers took a 15-8, 14-6, 15-4, 5-15, 15-11 victory to extend their home record to 6-1.

Clemson outhit Duke .344 to .114 in the first game, then let a 10-4 lead slip away in the second game. The Tigers battled back in Game Three, committing just two errors to outhit the Blue Devils, .387 to .125. Duke rallied to win game four and send the match into a fifth game. Clemson hit .361 in Game Five, with nine kills and three errors, while Duke hit .000 in the final game.

Stephanie Schultz led the Tigers with a .353 hitting percentage (17 kills, five errors, 34 attempts). Junior Cindy Stern hit .300, with 17 kills to push her career total to 1,019. Stern became just the eighth player to reach the 1,000 kill plateau in Clemson’s game versus Maryland earlier this season.

Alison Coday had 11 kills, one error and 28 attempts for a .357 attack percentage. Skye Frost led the Tigers with 18 digs, while Schultz led the team with seven blocks.

Duke (6-9, 1-4 ACC) was led by Sarah Peifer, who recorded a .419 hitting percentage off 21 kills, three errors and 43 attempts. Peifer and Ashley Harris each recorded 21 digs, and Megan Irvine tallied six blocks.

Clemson (11-5, 4-2 ACC) will play host to Wake Forest Saturday at 6 p.m.
