Virginia defeats Clemson 5-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA–The second ranked Virginia men’s tennis team completed the first undefeated ACC season in school history with a 5-2 win over No. 27 Clemson on Friday afternoon at Charlottesville, VA.

The Cavaliers (21-2, 9-0 ACC) took the early lead by winning the doubles point. Virginia got a win at No. 2 doubles from Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey at No. 2 doubles over Clement Reix and Sander Koning, 8-1.

The Tigers (23-9, 5-4) drew even when Nathan Thompson and Ryan Young upset No. 32 ranked Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) at No. 1 doubles. Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) then clinched the point for the Cavaliers as they topped Ryan Cook and Brett Twente 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, the Tigers tied the dual match at 1-1 when No. 22 ranked Thompson upset No. 11 ranked Stewart at No. 1 singles. Virginia retook the lead when Cohen completed a 6-4, 6-3 win over Clint Boling at No. 6 singles. That lead was extended minutes later when Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) had a 6-1, 6-2 win over Twente at No. 5 singles.

Devvarman clinched the dual match for the Cavaliers when he completed a 6-3, 7-6 win over Koning at the No. 2 position. Rizza added one more match for Virginia, a three set win over Reix at No. 5, before Clemson won the final match on the courts as Young defeated Huey at No. 5.

Clemson will play host to N.C. State on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the last home match of the season.
