Two Tigers To Compete At 2003 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships

CLEMSON, SC – Two members of the women’s swimming and diving team will represent Clemson at the 2003 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships on Mar. 20-22 in Auburn, AL. Mandy Commons will compete in the 100 breast, while Kim Routh will swim in the 500 and 1650 free for the Tigers. The meet will be held at the Martin Aquatics Center on Auburn’s campus with the preliminary rounds beginning at 11:00 a.m. and the finals at 7:00 p.m. each day.

Commons, a senior from Cincinnati, OH, qualified for nationals after posting a time of 1:02.18 in the preliminary round of the 100 breast at the 2003 ACC Championships. Commons went on to finish fourth in the event at the championships. Commons earned honorable mention All-America honors in 2001 for the 100 breast and 200 medley relay, and 2002 for the 400 medley relay. She was a member of the Tigers’ ACC Champion 200 medley relay team in 2002 and the ACC Co-Champion 400 medley relay team in 2003. She was a three-time All-ACC selection, in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and was named to the ACC Honor Roll in 2001 and 2002. Commons holds the fastest times in Clemson history in both the 100 and 200 breast.

Routh, a freshman from Sandusky, OH, posted a time of 16:32.21 in the 1650 free for a fourth-place finish at the 2003 ACC Championships. This time, the third fastest in Tiger history, qualified Routh for nationals in the event. Routh also posted a qualifying time of 4:48.44 in the preliminary round of the 500 free at the ACC Championships and went on to finish in eighth place in the event. Routh won the 500 free at four dual meets during the 2002-03 season. She also won the 200 free two times and the 1000 free three times this season.
