Box Score

Clemson, SC –

Yonder Alonso and Dennis Raben each crushed three-run homers to lead Miami (FL) to a 10-3 victory over #11 Clemson Friday night in the opener of a three-game series in front of 5,414 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Hurricanes improved to 16-12 on the season and 4-6 in conference action, while the Tigers fell to 17-8 overall and 4-3 in ACC play. Clemson’s 21-game home ACC winning streak came to an end after it began against the same Hurricane team in 2005. It was also Miami’s first win over the Tigers as an ACC member in eight tries. Clemson’s 11-game winning streak against teams from the state of Florida came to an end as well.

Starter Eric Erickson (4-3) earned the win, as he pitched 6.0 innings and allowed six hits and three runs. He also walked three and struck out two. Raben and Alex Koronis pitched a combined 3.0 scoreless innings of relief for the Hurricanes. Junior P.J. Zocchi (3-1) suffered his first career loss to fall to 10-1 in his fourth season in the program. He pitched 4.0 innings, allowing five hits, four runs, and two walks with five strikeouts. Five Tiger pitchers combined to strike out 14 batters.

The Tigers broke through with three runs on four hits in the third inning. Addison Johnson led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a one-out double to left field by Taylor Harbin. Marquez Smith then singled to left field, plating Harbin. Andy D’Alessio grounded a single through the right side to advance Smith to third. Smith then scored on Doug Hogan’s fielder’s choice grounder to the pitcher to put the Tigers ahead 3-0.

Clemson’s opponents totaled only two runs in the fourth inning in 2007 entering Friday’s contest, but the Hurricanes plated four runs to take the lead. With one out, Mark Sobolewski and Roger Tomas hit back-to-back singles, and Dave DiNatale drew a walk to load the bases. Sobolewski scored on a wild pitch, and a towering three-run homer to right field by Raben put the Hurricanes on top 4-3. It was Raben’s fifth home run of the season.

After two scoreless innings, the Hurricanes tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning. Alonso hit a three-run homer that barely cleared the fence in right-center.

Alonso led off with a solo home run to right-center in the top of the ninth for the Hurricanes. It was Alonso’s second homer of the night and eighth this season. Sobolewski followed with an infield single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tomas, and advanced to third on a balk. DiNatale doubled down the left-field line, scoring Sobolewski, and Raben singled to right-center to score Nick Freitas, who pinch ran for DiNatale.

Six Hurricanes had two hits to lead their 13-hit attack. Alonso and Raben also tallied four RBIs apiece.

Harbin, Hogan, and Smith led the Tigers with two hits and an RBI apiece. Hogan extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the second inning. Brad Chalk’s streak of reaching base ended Friday at 50 games.

Clemson and Miami continue their three-game series Saturday at 7:00 PM. Sunday’s game has been rescheduled for 12:00 PM at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
