Track & Field Kicks Off 2016 With Orange & Purple Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson will begin the 2016 season with the Orange & Purple Classic on Saturday, January 9 in the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex. The Tigers will play host to North Carolina A&T (M&W), Limestone (M&W), Anderson (M&W), Southern Wesleyan (M&W), Emmanuel (M&W), Florida International (M&W) and Florida A&M (W) in their season opener with a start time slated for 11:00 a.m.

The Clemson women’s track & field team is currently ranked 22nd in the preseason indoor rankings that was released Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers are the defending ACC Indoor and Outdoor Champions, and finished the 2015 indoor season tied for 12th at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Together, the men’s and women’s programs return six outdoor all-americans, five indoor all-americans, six ACC Outdoor Champions, six ACC Indoor Champions, 12 ACC Outdoor Championship medalists and 13 ACC Indoor Championship medalists from the 2015 season.

On the women’s side, Iana Amsterdam leads the team as an All-American and the reigning indoor and outdoor ACC Champion in the triple jump. All-American and three-time NCAA Championship participant, Tevin Hester will lead the men in his senior season. Last year, Hester won gold in the indoor 200 meter dash as well as the outdoor 100 and 200 meter dash and was named the Track MVP of both championship meets.
