ATLANTA – Chris Hobbs scored 25 points and Jamar McKnight added 22, leading Clemson to an 83-76 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday.
The Tigers (10-5, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) built a 14-point lead in the first seven minutes of the second half, withstood a Tech rally that cut the advantage to 3 points and then pulled away again at the end.
Tony Akins had 20 points, Marvin Lewis 19 and Clarence Moore 16 for the Yellow Jackets (7-8, 0-2).
Hobbs scored on the inside with 13:17 remaining to give the Tigers a 57-43 lead, their second 14-point lead of the half. Tech then started to chop away, with Moore scoring 12 of his 16 points over a 7 1/2-minute span to spark the Yellow Jackets.
Moore’s three-point play with 4:55 remaining cut the lead to 70-67, but that was as close as the Jackets could get.
Hobbs, who also had 10 rebounds, hit one of two free throws with 4:42 remaining and Edward Scott hit a 3-pointer with 3:08, building the lead to 74-67. Tech never got closer than 6 points the rest of the way.
Scott finished with 12 points and Tony Stockman added 11, including three 3-pointers.
The Tigers gave Tech a chance by missing 14 of their 30 free throws.
The game was tied at 34 before Scott’s 3-pointers put the Tigers in front to stay just before halftime.
