Tigers Upset Sixth-ranked Georgia 4-3 in Men’s Tennis

Damiisa Robinson defeated Raian Luchici at number-five singles 6-2, 6-1 in clinching the match as Clemson upset sixth-ranked Georgia 4-3 in a men’s intercollegiate tennis match at Clemson, SC Sunday night in the Hoke Sloan Indoor Tennis Center.

With the win, Clemson improves to 3-0 overall, while Georgia falls to 0-1 this season. Georgia was ranked sixth by the latest ITA national poll. This was the first Clemson win over Georgia since March 30, 1988, as Clemson defeated third-ranked Georgia 5-4. It was the first Tiger win over the Bulldogs at Clemson since April 9, 1987 as Clemson defeated Georgia 8-1.

Clemson swept all three doubles matches picking up the team point. The Tigers doubles team of Nathan Thompson and Jaimaine Jenkins defeated Bo Hodge and Nick Boeker 9-7. Hodge and Boeker are ranked 43rd as a doubles team.

At number-one singles, 25th-ranked Hodge of Georgia defeated Thompson 6-4, 6-2. The Tigers’ Sander Koning defeated 35th-ranked Nic Boeker 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at number two. Jenkins won at number-three singles over Stephan Timu 7-6, 7-6. Stracky Bobusic of Georgia defeated Ash Misquith 6-2, 6-2 at number four singles as Clemson held on to a 3-2 lead.

Robinson gave Clemson the fourth team point at number five singles. At number six singles the Bulldogs’ Jason Varela defeated John Boetsch 2-6, 6-2, 7-6.

“It was a tough five-hour match,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck Kriese. “We were fortunate to win. Georgia played with class and played like the championship program they are. I am proud of my guys. The momentum changed during the match, but we showed character and held on for the win.”
