Tigers Sweep William & Mary on Final Day of ITA Kick-off Weekend

WACO, TEXAS —  The Tigers (4-1, 0-0 ACC) won two doubles matches in tiebreaks to take the doubles point before impressive singles wins to beat William & Mary (0-3, 0-0 CAA) on Monday afternoon.

William & Mary started out strong as they took the match on Court 3 in doubles, but Teodor Giusca and Ryuhie Azuma went two for two this weekend on Court 1 as they beat the Tribe’s Davis/Brown. Shortly after, Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Spencer Whitaker rallied to win another tiebreak, 7-2, to secure the doubles point.

Giusca won and finished first on Court 2 for the second straight day, making quick work of his opponent, 6-2, 6-1. Right after, Azuma won on Court 1 by another score of 6-2, 6-1 before sophomore Whitaker took Court 4, solidifying the win for the Tigers.

“It was nice to bounce back after yesterday and get a win,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “The loss to Miami was disappointing as we did not dig deep enough. The boys responded well in singles today against William and Mary. We need to continue to improve our doubles as we head into next weekend’s match against South Carolina. We are excited to get back to work and head down to Columbia.”

Up Next:

The Tigers will travel to Columbia, S.C. on Friday, Feb. 4 to take on in-state rival South Carolina. First serve for that match is slated for 5:00 p.m.
