Tigers Split on Day Three of ITA Regionals

CARY, N.C. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team completed day three of the ITA Regionals in Cary, N.C. The Tiger doubles pairs of Ethan Silva/Matt Pitts dropped their match to end their run in ITA Regionals, but Ryuhei Azuma/Spencer Whitaker were victorious to continue their impressive doubles play another day.

“Spencer and Ryuhei had another very good performance today,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “They are doing the basics very well and playing good, aggressive doubles. Excited to see if they can win both of their matches tomorrow and receive an automatic bid to the ITA Fall Nationals. Ethan and Matt had a solid performance against a top team from NC State. They had a few set points in the second set, but they were not able to convert either on one. I was happy with their performance and feel both Ethan and Matt are trending in the right direction with their doubles play.”

Both teams battled as Azuma/Whitaker won their match against Mallory/Broadstreer of UNCW, 6-2, 7-6 (10-4) for their third straight victory while Silva/M. Pitts were beaten by Staeheli/Catry from NC State, 6-3, 7-6 to end their run.

Whitaker and Azuma will return to the court tomorrow in Cary in hopes of winning two more matches to keep their run alive.
