CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson will complete its fall portion of the 2018-19 women’s golf schedule at the Battle of the Beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico this weekend. The 17-team tournament will run from Friday, Nov. 2 through Sunday, Nov. 4. The 17-team event features six top 25 teams, including Clemson, who is ranked 23rd in the nation in the latest Golfstat rankings. The field will play 18 holes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to complete the 54-hole, three-day tournament.
The field includes three top 10 programs, second-ranked Texas, fifth-ranked Vanderbilt, ninth-ranked Virginia. Rounding out the six nationally ranked teams competing at the tournament are 21st-ranked Baylor 22nd-ranked Auburn and the 23rd-ranked Tigers.
Freshman Ivy Shepherd leads the Tigers team after three tournaments with a stroke average of 70.75 and ranks 43rd nationally in the latest Golfstat rankings, moving up 14 spots. The last time out, Shepherd fired rounds of 76-70-68 for a two-under par 214 and an 11th place finish at the Ruth Chris Tar Heel Invite that took place Oct. 12-14 at the UNC Finley Golf Course. Her final round 68 ties her best round of the year. The Peachtree City, Ga. native leads the team in birdies (32) and par three scoring (2.83).
Senior Alice Hewson is second on the team with a stroke average of 72.83 in her two tournaments. Her first round of the Ruth Chris Tar Heel Invite marked her 100th career round as a Tiger, becoming only the third to do so in program history. Hewson’s score has counted towards the team score in 99 of her 100 rounds.
Junior Ana Paula Valdes had the second best finish on the Clemson squad in the last outing, finishing 29th with rounds of 76-71-74 for a five-over par 221. Valdes enters the 54-hole tournament with a stroke average of 72.88, third best on the team.
Freshmen Gracyn Burgess and Alexandra Swayne also will be in the Clemson lineup. Burgess is entering her third tournament for the Tigers with a stroke average of 73.60.
