Tigers Head to Charleston

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson returns to action for its second tournament of the year this Sunday at the Cougar Classic at The Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C.   The three day, 54 hole event will run October 2-4 and will feature a national field of 21 teams.  Kelley Hester’s team is coming off a strong third-place finish at the Schooner Fall Classic in Oklahoma this past weekend.

Alice Hewson was the top performer for Clemson last week with a 203 score for 54 holes. The sophomore from Great Britain finished in second place with that 10 under par score, the low score in Clemson history for a 54-hole event.  Her performance included an opening round 66, the second lowest score in Clemson history for 18 holes.  Hewson is defending co-champion of the Cougar Classic and is looking to become the first two-time inner of the tournament that is in its 14th year.

Clemson will be one of 21 schools in the national field that also includes ACC teams Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest.   SEC teams in the field include Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi State and South Carolina.   The tournament also features Big Ten schools Maryland, Indiana, Penn State and Wisconsin.

Hester will use the same lineup she used for the first tournament of the year.  Supporting Hewson will be junior Sydney Legacy, freshman Ana Paula Valdes, junior Marisa Messana and senior Sloan Shanahan.  Shanahan hit the first shot in Clemson women’s golf history at this course in 2013.
