ATLANTA, Ga. – The Clemson diving team concluded competition at the 2015 ACC Championships on Saturday with three top-20 performances in the platform. Sophomores Sarah Braun and Danielle Reitsma and junior Megan Helwagen placed 15th, 16th and 17th, respectively, for the Tigers in the tower event.
Braun finished her five dives with a total of 217.10 points, followed by Reitsma and Helwagen, who were just over one point apart, at 213.35 and 212.10, respectively. With her 15th-place finish, Braun scored 12 points toward the team’s total, while Reitsma posted 11 and Helwagen tallied nine team points in the event.
Reitsma’s second dive of the day was her best, a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck (305C), for which she scored 71.40 points, which was the second-highest score among all women’s platform dives in Saturday’s preliminary round. It was just below the 72.00 points scored by Maryellen Targonski of Duke. Reitsma’s judges’ score total of 25.5 (she kept three scores of 8.5) was the best of the day in terms of judges’ scores, ahead of Targonski’s 24.0 (three 8.0s).
Earlier in the week, Helwagen was Clemson’s top performer in the three meter, finishing 22nd overall with 254.00 points, while Reitsma placed 24th in the event with 245.00 points. The top-24 finishes resulted in three team points for Helwagen and one for Reitsma. Braun recorded the Tigers’ best score in the one-meter on Thursday, placing just outside the top 24 with 234.95 points.
For the championships, Braun, Helwagen and Reitsma each scored 12 points toward the team total of 36.
Braun, Helwagen and Reitsma will be joined by freshmen Allison Brophy and Hannah Donovan and senior Jessica Doolittle when they return to competition at the NCAA Zone B Championships on March 9-11 in Athens, Ga.
