CLEMSON, S.C. — Andrew Swanson shot a final round 73 and finished with an even-par score of 216 for the 54 holes in the Watersound Invitational at Sharks Tooth Golf Club in Panama City, Fla. The Tigers finished ninth in the 11-team field that included six of the top 20 teams in the nation.
The Tigers played without top player Kian Rose, who is recovering from a wrist injury. He has a team best 71.13 stroke average this season. Rose is expected back in the lineup at the next tournament, the Pinehurst Invitational, March 6-7.
Swanson finished with rounds of 69-74-73 over the three days to finish in 28th place. He finished with a team best 13 birdies and was among the tournament leaders in par three scoring with a 2.92 figure.
All five Clemson golfers in the starting lineup, plus Drayton Stewart, who was playing as an individual, shot one over par rounds of 73 in the final round on Tuesday.
Sean Curren, a sophomore from Illinois, finished in 38th place after rounds of 72-75-73. He had nine birdies in recording his 220 total. Fifth-year senior Zack Gordon also finished in 38th place with a 220 total after his final round 73. He had rounds of 74-73 to start the tournament and also finished with nine birdies.
Jonathan Nielsen finished with 12 birdies, second among Clemson golfers, and had a 222 total. He was actually Clemson’s best golfer over the last 36 holes with rounds of 70-73 on Monday and Tuesday. He finished in 45th place.
Freshman Thomas Higgins, playing in his first tournament in the Clemson lineup, had a 224 total for his 54 holes to finish 50th. Stewart concluded the event in 54th place with a 227 total.
Number-one ranked Vanderbilt won the tournament with a score of 826, one shot better than 12th-ranked Georgia Tech.Clemson returns to action at the Pinehurst Invitational at the Pinehurst #2 Course in North Carolina. Clemson is the defending champion.
