CLEMSON, S.C. – Behind the strength of seven winning performances, Clemson track & field concluded its action at the 49er Classic at Charlotte’s Irwin Belk Track on Saturday. In addition, the Tigers established five top-10 marks in the school’s record books on the final day of the opening outdoor meet.
Marlena Wesh and Nia Fluker both earned victories as individuals and with the 4×400 relay Saturday. Fluker posted a time of 54.74 to win the 400, while Wesh ran 24.01 in the 200 final. The two then helped the 4×4 to a winning time of 3:37.28 to end the day. Nyjah Cousar and Olivia James rounded out Clemson’s order in the relay.
Natalie Anthony capped a great opening weekend performance with a personal outdoor best in the 3000 meters, crossing the finish line in a time of 9:41.22 – the seventh-best time in school history.
Shai Carpenter and Torian Ware claimed wins for Clemson’s men in the field, Carpenter with a mark of 50-5.25 in the triple jump and Ware with a 7-1.75 effort in the high jump. Ware’s jump was a personal outdoor best and tied for fifth in the Tiger record books.
The Tigers added 13 top-five performances Saturday, including six runner-up finishes. Marcus Brown made his return a successful one after sitting out the indoor season. The Gaithersburg, Md., product hit an outdoor best 57-1.5 in the shot put, No. 7 in school history. Another thrower, freshman James Plummer, took fourth in the men’s discus with Clemson’s No. 7 all-time throw of 166-9.
Also among Clemson’s silver medalists Saturday was Lindsey Bellaran, who put together the eighth-best time in Clemson’s history in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.74.
The Tigers resume outdoor season next weekend at the Raleigh (N.C.) Relays and Texas Relays.
