Tiger Track & Field Heads to Blacksburg for Hokie Invitational

Jan. 20, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson track & field teams will travel to Blacksburg, VA to compete at the Hokie Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The action starts at 5:00 PM with the men’s and women’s triple jump on Friday, followed by the prelims for the 60 hurdles starting at 5:15.

Josh Fowler and April Sinkler, both NCAA qualifiers in the triple jump and in Sinkler’s case a two-time All-American in the event, are slated to compete. Other field event performers in action on Friday are Alex Padgett and Brittney Waller in the men’s and women’s weight throw, respectively. Waller recorded the third-best mark in Clemson history last weekend, while both rank among the top 10 nationally according to the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS).

A large portion of Friday’s track time will be spent with the 60m dash and 60m hurdles, for both programs. The women’s hurdle prelims start at 5:15 PM. Clemson’s Briana Rollins, No. 2 nationally, headlines a group of eight females entered in the event. Briana Johnson, who both own top-20 times in the 60 hurdles, will also compete. Spencer Adams, No. 10 on the latest TFRRS performance list for the men’s 60 hurdles, leads the Clemson men’s contingent at 5:35.

The prelims for the 60m dash begin at 5:50 on Friday. Clemson sophomore Stormy Kendrick clocked a personal best 7.32 last weekend, third-best in school history. Kendrick is sixth on the TFRRS list, while classmate Edgerson is No. 9 in the event after running a 7.37 two weeks ago at the Clemson Invitational. On the men’s side, Justin Murdock and Warren Fraser are both coming off personal bests last weekend in the event with times of 6.70 and 6.73, respectively. The men’s prelims are scheduled for 6:10 PM.

Clemson will have at least one entry in every field event on Saturday, beginning with Michael Kopanski, both solid freshmen in the pole vault, compete at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, respectively. Sinkler returns to action Saturday to lead a group of four in the long jump at 12:00 PM.

On the track, Clemson’s focus on Saturday will be the 200m dash and the 4x400m relays. The women’s 200m is scheduled for 1:20 PM. Five females are slated to race. The men’s 200 will follow and will feature season leader La’Mont Jackson, among a group of five entries.

The Tigers are among the nation’s best in the 4×4, both men and women. Last weekend, the women’s team of Whitney Fountain, Stormy Kendrick, Brianna Rollins and Marlena Wesh recorded the nation’s sixth-best time. The women’s relay is set for 3:30 PM, followed by the men’s 4×4 to conclude the meet.
