CHAPEL HILL, NC – Clemson’s Kathi Gerber, a sophomore transfer from Vienna, WV, won two matches in the qualifying round of the ITA Southeast Regional on Thursday, Oct. 13 to advance to the main draw of the tournament. She improved to 5-3 overall this season and will face 108th-ranked Jenna Long of North Carolina on Friday at 1:30 PM in the Round of 64.
Gerber defeated Michele Fanney of Davidson, 6-1, 7-5, in her first match of the day and then won a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Tennessee Tech’s Alet Boonzaier in the qualifying round of 16.
Four other Tiger tennis players will begin singles competition on Friday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC. Carol Salge will face Sandie Knight of East Tennessee State at 8:00 AM, while Maria Brito will meet Charlotte’s Ofra Friedman at 10:30 AM. Daniela Alvarez’s match against Bryce Marable of Tennessee is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM, and Federica van Adrichem and North Carolina’s Hanes Harris, who won two matches on Thursday to advance to the main bracket, will take to the court at 2:00 PM.
In doubles action, Clemson’s duo of Brito and Salge fell to Ana Jerman and Christian Tara of Wake Forest in the opening round by a score of 8-6. The Tiger tandem of Alvarez and van Adrichem will play their first match of the tournament on Friday at 6:00 PM against Charlotte’s team of Ashley Murray and Ali Piacente.
