Clemson, SC – The Clemson men’s track and field team won the 2001 Clemson Invitational while the women finished second in the meet held at Littlejohn Coliseum Friday and Saturday. The men’s team scored 210 points in capturing the title over 12 other teams, including 10 Division I teams. The University of South Alabama finished second among the men’s teams with 65.5 pints and North Carolina A&T was third with 47.5 points. The University of South Florida won the women’s title, finishing with 132.5 points. The Clemson women’s team edged Western Carolina University to place second with 92 points to the Catamounts 87.5.
The Tiger men’s team won nine events en route to the victory while the women’s team claimed five events. The teams combined to meet provisional qualifying standards in three running events and met four provisional qualifying marks in field events.
In the running events, Clemson swept the 60m High Hurdles. Sultan Tucker won the men’s event in a provisional time of 7.86 while Keke Elder won the women’s event in a provisional qualifying time of 8.43. David Collins won the men’s 60m dash in 6.71to meet provisional qualifying standards and set the fastest time of the year for Clemson. Jason Meany and Shannon Schoppman swept the one-mile run with times of 4:19.89 and 5:12.34, respectively. The men’s 4x400m relay “A” team won that event in 3:16.96 while the Distance Medley relay team also won that event in 10:25.59.
In the field events, Kai Maull won the men’s triple jump with a mark of 49’3 3/4″ while David Schenek claimed the weight throw with a meack of 55’11 3/4″. The Tigers swept the pole vault as Ryan Lewis won the men’s event, clearing 15’9 1/4″, and Mandy McLane won the women’s event with a mark of 11’9 3/4″. Malcaolm Reynolds and Doug Ameigh both posted provisional qualifying marks in the high jump as they took first and second in that event. Reynolds cleared 7’2 1/4″ while Ameigh cleared 7”1 1/2″. Jamine Moton recorded provisional qualifying marks as she won both the shot put (51’7″) and the weight throw (59’9″).
The Clemson men’s and women’s teams travel to Johnson City, TN, next Saturday to compete at the Ikon Invitational.
