CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s cross country team finished second in the Clemson Invitational, but claimed the South Carolina State Collegiate Cross Country Championships held Saturday morning. Life University won the Clemson Invitational with 38 points, while the Tigers finished second with 42 points. The University of Maryland was third with 80 points and Winthrop University took fourth with 96 points. Coastal Carolina University finished sixth with 142 points, and Wofford College rounded out the men’s field with 210 points.
Life University’s Joseph Mutai recorded the 15th-fastest time (25:06.6) ever posted on the Clemson cross country course to win the individual Clemson Invitational title. Scott Shaw led Clemson with a time of 25:10, and Winthrop’s Adam Growley finished third in 25:16. Life’s Francis Korir completed the course in 25:42 to take fourth, and Savannah State’s Samuel Mangusho finished fifth in 25:48.
All of Clemson’s runners finished in the top 20 in the Clemson Invitational. Shaw finished second and Derrick Wyatt finished sixth in 25:55. Matt Gunn completed the course in 26:26 to take 10th place, while Travis Alexander was 11th in 26:29. Mike Barton posted a 13th place finish in 26:43, and David Smith was 20th in 27:05.
In the South Carolina State Championship meet, Shaw claimed the individual title, while Wyatt finished third. Gunn placed fifth and Alexander was sixth. Barton finished in seventh place and Smith was 10th. All of Clemson’s runners earned All-State honors.
The Clemson men’s cross country team will compete at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Greenville, SC, on Oct. 13.
