Three Tigers Complete Day One of Clemson Heptathlon

The Clemson men’s track & field team had three participants on day one of the Heptathlon Championships from the school’s Indoor Track & Field Facility. After four of the seven events, Maurice Smith of unattached status leads the way with 3,342 points. He is going for three straight heptathlon titles at Clemson’s facility. In second place is Clemson’s Brent Hobbs with 3,109 points, followed closely by the Tigers’ Ryan Koontz with 3,091 points. Mike Feathers, a third Tiger athlete, is seventh after day one with 2,730 points.

Koontz posted the second-best time in the 60m dash with a 7.07, which was also a season-best for him. Hobbs was fourth overall at 7.16, while Feathers finished 12th with a time of 7.47 seconds. In the long jump, Hobbs posted a season-best mark of 23’2.5″ to finish second in that event, just ahead of Koontz who leaped 22’7.75″. Feathers posted the 10th-best mark in the long jump with a leap of 20’9″.

In the shot put, Hobbs’ toss of 45’7.25″ was Clemson’s best effort this season and good enough for third among the heptathletes. Koontz was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 42’2″, while Feathers was seventh with a mark of 41’5.75″, also a season-best for him. In the high jump, Koontz was second with a leap of 6’6″. Hobbs cleared 6’3.5″, while Feathers was at 6’2.25″ for sixth position in that event.

The NCAA automatic qualifying mark for the heptathlon is 5,650 points, while the provisional qualifying mark is 5,200 points. The heptathlon concludes on Saturday, beginning with the 60m hurdles at 11:00 AM. The pole vault and 1000m run will be the final two events on Saturday.
