CHARLESTON, SC – Clemson women’s golfers Ashlan Ramsey, McKenzie Talbert and Sloan Shanahan all began play at the 113th US Women’s Amateur at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, SC.
Ramsey had the top score among the three with a five over par 76, good enough for 54th place after the first day of two days of stroke play qualifying. Talbert, of North Augusta, SC, shot a 79 and stands in 94th place, while Shanahan, of Suwanee, GA scored an 81 and stands 127th.
One hundred and fifty-six ladies are in the field and fighting for 64 spots in match play. All 156 players will play a second round of stroke play on Tuesday and then the match play will begin Wednesday. The tournament will complete Sunday with a 36-hole match play championship.
Ramsey, who is on the cutline after the first round, started strong with a one over par 36 on the back nine, her first nine of the ay. She scored a birdie on the par three 17th hole. But, Ramsey, who is coming off a victory at the Georgia Women’s Amateur, scored a 40 on the front nine, including a double bogey on the par three third hole.
Talbert was just five over for her first 15 holes, including a birdie on the par five ninth hole. But, she finished with bogeys on holes 16-18 to score 79. Shanahan had scores of 41-40 for her nines and had 10 pars, six bogeys and two double bogeys in scoring an 81.
