SPORT UPDATES

Baseball (@ClemsonBaseball)Record: 20-10, 9-4 ACCClemson won three of four games last week. The Tigers defeated Furman (13-2) and Winthrop (4-2) on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, then split a pair of weekend games against NC State. Steve Wilkerson continues to be on fire at the plate, as he went 9-for-15 (.600) with four RBIs and five runs on the week. The Tigers conclude the NC State series Monday night (Military Appreciation Day) before hosting Georgia on Tuesday night and traveling to Charlottesville to take on Virginia over the weekend.

Men’s Basketball (@ClemsonMBB)Record: 23-13The Tigers made the trip to New York City, falling 65-59 in the semifinals to SMU. Rod Hall posted 18 points in the loss. Clemson improved its win total by 10 from the previous season, tied for the biggest single-season jump in school history. The Tigers finished the season atop the ACC rankings in free throw percentage (.744) for the first time in 61 seasons. Clemson also led the ACC with 6.1 blocks per game and in three-point percentage defense (.285).

Football (@ClemsonFB)The Tigers continued spring practice in preparation for the April 12 Spring Game. The team holds its second scrimmage of the preseason Monday, and practices again Wednesday and Thursday this week. The Spring Game kicks off at 4 p.m., and is televised by ESPNU.

Men’s Golf (@ClemsonMensGolf)The Tigers finished 15th in a 15-team tournament at the 3M August Invitational over the weekend. Miller Capps, Clemson’s #1 player contracted a case of the flu after the first of two rounds on Saturday and had to withdraw two holes into the second round. He also could not go in the third round, so Clemson was the only team in the tournament with four players for the last 36 holes. Clemson was tied for first at eight under par at the time Capps withdrew. In Larry Penley’s first 30 years as head coach a player had to withdraw due to illness or injury just four times. Now it has happened in consecutive tournaments.

Stephen Behr was the top Clemson golfer for the 54 holes with a 218 score, good for 26th place. The Tigers return to action in two weeks at the Lonnie Poole Invitational in Raleigh.

Women’s Golf (@ClemsonWGolf)J.T. Horton’s team does not play again until the ACC Tournament in Greensboro April 16-18. Ashlan Ramsey did compete this past weekend at the Kraft Nabisco, a major on the LPGA Tour. She did not make the cut. In the latest rankings, Ramsey is 17th in the nation according to Golfstat and 23rd in Golfweek. Sloan Shanahan is 53rd in Golfweek and 59th in Golfstat.

Women’s Soccer (@ClemsonWSoccer)The Tigers concluded their spring season on Saturday with a win over Alabama at Historic Riggs Field. The team was undefeated in its spring exhibition matches, finishing with a 5-0-2 record which included wins over the Crimson Tide as well as 2013 NCAA Tournament Semifinalist Virginia Tech, Georgia, Furman and Wofford, and ties against Tennessee and ETSU.

Men’s Tennis (@ClemsonMTennis)Record: 18-5, 5-3The 17th-ranked Tigers were 1-1 over the weekend, nearly pulling off the upset over fourth-ranked Virginia on Friday (lost 3-4) before defeating #38 Virginia Tech on Sunday (won 5-2) at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. Senior Dominique Maden, playing in his final two regular season home matches, was 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles play (with Hunter Harrington), with three of the four matches coming against ranked opponents. The Tigers have a difficult week coming up, as they hit the road to face two ACC opponents ranked 13th or better nationally (at #13 Duke Friday in Durham, at #9 North Carolina Sunday in Chapel Hill.)

Women’s Tennis (@ClemsonWTennis)Record: 17-4, 9-1 ACCThe women’s tennis team set a new school mark for best league start by winning their first nine contests with a victory over Florida State before falling at No. 9 Virginia on the road on Sunday. After a stretch of seven of the last eight matches being on the road (in eight different states), the Tigers gear up for two key battles – Syracuse on Friday and Miami on Sunday. All four contests remaining in the regular season are at home.

Track and Field (@CUTrackandField)Marcus Brown won his section of the men’s shot put with a personal best effort of 58-11.25, fourth-best in school history, to highlight action at the Florida Relays. The women’s 4×400 relay posted a season-best time of 3:34.35 and finished fourth against a quality field. James Plummer posted a season-best 168-9 in the discus throw, No. 5 on the school’s all-time performance list. In Friday action, Whitney Fountain was fifth in the long jump with a season-best 19-8.75 and Marlena Wesh was sixth in the 400 dash (52.85). The Tigers are off this weekend and next compete in Chapel Hill, N.C., April 17-19 at the ACC Outdoor Championships.

Volleyball (@ClemsonVB)After a 3-0 win against Furman on Apr. 1, the Tigers host Furman and Presbyterian for a round-robin tournament Saturday in Jervey Gym beginning at 10 a.m.
